Plaça de Cort

Plaça de Cort centers on a gnarled, massive olive tree brought down from the mountains of Mallorca. The square serves as the seat of local government, dominated by the seventeen century town hall with its wide, carved wooden eaves. City officials once held court here under the open sky to settle disputes between neighbors. During the rebellion of the Brotherhoods in the fifteen hundreds, the building became a fortress, and the city councilors fled to the nearby bell tower to escape the mob.
