Plaça Major

The Plaça Major in Palma is a rectangular expanse framed by tall, yellow-walled buildings with striking green shutters. Before this square took its current shape in the mid-nineteenth century, the site housed the Convent of San Felipe Neri and the headquarters of the Spanish Inquisition. In eighteen twenty-three, officials demolished the convent, and the Inquisition offices followed shortly after. Today, the space hosts painters and street performers, replacing the former chambers of religious trials with a wide, open stage for public life.
