Es Baluard Museu d'Art Contemporani de Palma

The Es Baluard museum occupies the seventeenth-century bastion of Saint Peter, a stone fortification that once guarded Palma against pirate raids. Thick, sand-colored limestone walls now enclose bright, modern galleries where Mediterranean light pours through wide glass ceilings. Architects designed these spaces to wrap around the original ramparts and cisterns instead of replacing them. When the museum first opened in two thousand four, staff discovered an old hidden staircase used by guards to access the harbor, which remains visible today.
