Plaça de l'Olivar

The steel and glass roof over the Mercat de l'Olivar shelters the largest food market in Palma. While the structure dates to the nineteen fifties, the square itself marks the site of a former convent. In nineteen zero four, the city demolished the seventeenth century sanctuary of the Olive Tree to make room for urban expansion. Today, vendors pull crates of fresh red prawns and Ensaimada pastries across the same limestone floor where monks once held silent prayers under the trees.
