Plaça del Mercat

Plaça del Mercat features a distinctive cast-iron kiosk topped with a small, ornate roof that sits squarely in the center of the square. During the nineteenth century, this space served as the city’s primary vegetable market, where farmers brought produce from the surrounding countryside. In eighteen seventy-four, the local authorities moved the market to a new hall nearby, but the residents refused to leave. They kept selling their goods here for another decade until the police finally cleared the square by force.
